Dark furniture has it’s place, but the way our home office sat in a corner without any nearby windows meant it needed some lightening up. As much as I loved this desk we found at Mr. Charming’s great aunt’s house, it was nicked and damaged in a way that was not trendy. I’d always intended on giving it a face lift, but never got around to it until recently.
Here is what it looked like before. Do you remember how we decoupaged a vintage map onto the top? You can read about that here. Unfortunately, the map didn’t match the paint color I had and I didn’t want to go out and buy more paint. I had to peel it off, but don’t worry, it was salvaged and used in another decor piece which will be coming soon ;).
Instead, the desk got to take on a whole new and beautifully blue and daringly distressed life.
I decided to leave the drawer faces as they were to get that two tone look and also as a memorial of what the desk once was. As I was sanding and painting, baby Jordan had a ton of fun crawling through the “tunnel” of newspapers as fast as he could. He and I were both covered in blue and giggling uncontrollably at his antics.
A bit of sand paper was used to distress it at the edges; not too much, because I do believe there is a happy medium when it comes to distressing.
I was so happy to find four of these drawer handles in our garage (buying older homes has it’s perks of leftover treasures). One of them was taken to Menards to see if it could be matched. It was just my lucky day as not only did I find the exact match, but it was on sale that day too! They were a little tricky to put on as the holes from the previous ones were off by just a smidge.
I’m definitely happy with the way it turned out.
