10 Stay at Home Mom Approved Business Ideas

I almost cringe at the title of this post. It seems the internet is full of gimmicky, spammy blog posts telling stay at home moms how they can get rich in their pjs. It’s so hard to sort through what’s actually quality, tested and tried ideas. Well, let me tell you right from the beginning that I am writing this from the perspective of a stay at home mom. Not from the perspective of some big company trying to get your money by joining their MLM or something. These are ideas from businesses I’ve actually started or personally know other moms who have started these types of businesses with great success.
Before I go on, I’d like to explain that starting a business as a stay at home Mom is very different from people without kids starting a business. There are certain things that disqualify specific ideas because of the tiny people running around the house. Those have all been taken into consideration when writing this post. Here are 10 business ideas that are actually good for stay at home Moms:

Virtual Assistance

If you have skills that can be done remotely from a computer you could start a successful VA business. It’s perfect for stay at home Moms because it can be done on the computer at times that work best for you (Yay for naps!), it doesn’t take you away from your kids, and allows you to interact with other adults. I’ve done virtual assistant work and loved every bit of it. It’s also very profitable if you do it right (at the end of this post, I’ll tell you how I can help you start your VA business the right way).

Creating info products

Information is valuable. Organized and well presented information is like gold in today’s society. Many Moms have been able to build very profitable businesses selling info products such as eBooks, blogs, and tutorials. For the same reasons virtual assistance is great for Moms, so is being an infopreneur.

My Stay at Home Mom Survival Kit (pictured above) has made a nice side income for me without requiring a lot of daily work.

In Home Daycare

You’re caring for kids anyway, why not take on one or two more and earn an income? Be sure to check local regulations on the amount of kids you can keep without liscensing.

Subscription Boxes

This is a trendy business model that has worked well for many businesses. You curate a group of items based on a theme and release them for sale at regular intervals (monthly, quarterly, bi-weekly, etc.). I love the idea of involving older kids in the packaging and mailing of the boxes.

Creating and Selling handmade items

The rise of Etsy has made this a great way for many Moms to make money at home. Craft fairs and other such community events offer another way to sell and have a small retreat from the kids.

Coaching

There will always be a need for personal, business, and life coaches and this is something that can Moms can do online while caring for their kids.

Event planning

If you are good at organizing and planning, helping others plan their events can be a good way for stay at home moms to make money. I have a cousin that is very successful at this and she has three young kids. This may not be perfect for everyone as it could potentially take you away from your kids often.

Graphic Design

If you have the money to invest in a good computer and design software and a few online courses on the subject and you have a creative eye, offering graphic design services is a great way to bring in income from home. I’ve done some designing for other entrepreneurs and love it!

Photography

While this may take you away from younger kids too often, photography businesses are great for stay at home moms with older kids. This does take some investment and learning, but if it’s something you love and are able to do, you’ll find it to be a profitable business. I have an aunt who’s photography business is very successful.

Teaching Online

This may go along with the sale of info products, but it’s big enough I felt it warrants it’s own bullet. Teaching classes or running an online course is not only a very profitable business, but also incredibly fulfilling, especially for stay at home moms who need a little adult interaction. Once again, if it’s online, it’s a good match for moms.

I’m sure there are a lot more things out there that stay at home moms can make a profit from, but this is a good list to get you started. Whatever business you choose to start as a stay at home mom, I have a free resource that will be a huge help in getting started in the right direction. It’s the Mom Business Starter Kit and you can download it for free by clicking here.
